Josephine O'Halloran, Therapy FAQ’s:
What is counselling?
Counselling focuses on a paricular problem or difficulty that the client is having and is usually short term. It is always at the request of the client as no one can properly be ‘sent’ for counselling.
What is Psychotherapy?
- Also known as the ‘talking cure,’ psychotherapy is the practice of tending to or healing the soul, body, and mind.
- It is not about giving instruction or advice.
- Psychotherapy encompasses past, present and future, and acknowledges various forms of consciousness.
- There are many types of approaches and school of thought in psychotherapy, some are better suited for more immediate, briefer therapy issues, while others are more appropriate for deeper, longer-term therapy.
What kinds of issues do clients bring to the therapy sessions?
The more common issues include:
- Abuse
- Adoption
- Anxiety & panic attacks
- Bereavement
- Depression
- Grief & Loss
- Identity Problems
- Life Changes
- Low Self-Esteem & Lack of Self Confidence
- Relationships
- Personal Development
- Stress
Everything the clients discuss is confidential except if I feel that they are a danger to themselves or others. Then I would feel obliged to break confidentiality.
What are the Benefits to Psychotherapy?
- The client can experience an increase in self-awareness and self-confidence.
- He/she will feel in charge of his/her life.
- He/she may experience better sleeping and eating patterns.
- Their personal/professional relationships improve.
